Today, 103 years ago the 2-day old German republic surrendered unconditionally and WWI came to an end. On my maternal side, my great-great-grandfather and his son were both enlisted (although i believe Father Freitag was in the reserves). This family portrait dates from Feb 1919. pic.twitter.com/UWZsVKZfh5— _bydbach_ (@_bydbach_) November 11, 2021

Fast forward to 1917, and here is Walter now in his own company at Riesa. He certainly did not share his dad's cheery outlook from three years earlier. In fact, he REALLY didn't like being in the army and was looking for opportunities to be allowed home for as long as possible. pic.twitter.com/rWsZp1CeGF— _bydbach_ (@_bydbach_) November 11, 2021
